I make stuff

As you probably know, I make a lot of stuff.  In light of that, I'm starting a new series called I make stuff in which I will show off all the stuff I make! (Even if it's bad or doesn't work out how I wanted it to!)

Today's entry is some baby shoes I made for Nikolai.  I bought this pattern a few months ago on etsy intending to make some baby shoes for Nikolai and just now remembered that I had it.

I made the fourth pattern on the top and I'm pretty proud of how they turned out:

Grippy stuff on the bottom for easier walking.

Added bonus: All I had to buy for them was the grippy fabric and some fusible fleece for the padding.  The outer fabric is an old pair of my jeans and the lining is one of Jesse's old shirts!

Note that there are no pictures of Nikolai wearing them...we can force them on his feet when we're going out and want him to have another layer against the cold, but he's like his Ma and hates wearing shoes so he promptly pulls them off when we're inside so I have no photographic evidence of him wearing them! But either way, I'm happy to have made them so he can at least have something warm on his feet when we go outside.

That's a first

Remember the altered book I entered in our local bookstore's contest a few weeks ago? Well I went to pick up my entry and found out...*drumroll please*....

I won second place! I'll admit, I was disappointed to not have won first place, but I was excited to have won something! I don't think I've ever won anything before so it was really fun to be recognized for something I made (especially something that was an idea that was uniquely mine, not something I copied).

Here's my prize:

It' a soft book cover! I'm not sure exactly what it's for (maybe you put your books in in your purse so they don't get all dinged up?) but it's fun to win a prize either way!

Alright, I think I'm done bragging now :)  Thanks for indulging me!

O Tannenbaum?

This year we wasted no time and put up our Christmas decorations the day after Thanksgiving! Our apartment is pretty small but we fit in as much holiday cheer as we could manage.

A Christmas tree in the corner:

Stockings over the couch:

Christmas lights over the bookshelf:

Ornaments and a tiny nativity on the shelf:

And an advent calendar made very recently by yours truly! (to be filled with Christmas scriptures and treats shortly)

And, because we have a baby, here's how our tree will look anytime Nikolai is awake:

Coffee tables sure make good barricades!

We're very excited for this holiday season!

10 months old!

Our Nikolai is getting so old! This month has just whizzed by.  Not too much has changed since last month. Nikolai waves a little now but has also started walking! He's not great at it yet but he's quickly improving. Now we just want him to talk! ;D

And now some gratuitous pictures of His Cuteness:

He figured out he can take bites out of apples so now they're his favorite snack!

Stuffing himself at Thanksgiving.

Pushing his baby bathtub (now retired in favor of the big bathtub) down the hallway.

Walking with help!

Diving into his toybox!

He's a sweet, adventurous, happy boy and we love him so!

The Liebster Award

My awesome friend Megan recently nominated me for the Liebster award, a sign of appreciation and encouragement for bloggers with under 200 followers.  As part of the nomination, you're supposed to answer 11 questions they post for you, nominate 11 more bloggers (although I won't be doing that many), state 11 odd things about yourself, and post 11 more questions for those people to answer!

11 Questions from Megan

1. Fiction, non-fiction, or poetry?
Definitely fiction!
2. Favorite animal?
Frogs! I'm not sure why but they've always been my favorite.

3. If you could wake up tomorrow morning and speak any foreign language fluently, which one would you choose?
Russian! (We're trying to teach Nikolai)

4. What is your answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything?

5.  Did you have a favorite year in school?
Uh...well no, not really.  Although 3rd grade was pretty great.

6. If you could live in any state, where would you live?
I don't know! I haven't lived in enough yet to have a favorite ;)

7. If you could live in a foreign country, where would you live?
If Russia weren't so corrupt I'd definitely pick there, cause I totally fell in love with it last summer.  But since that's not really an option, I'd either pick Germany or Canada.

8. Favorite decade of the 20th century?
Probably the 60s!

9. Favorite style of art?
Whatever style Caspar David Friedrich used or anything that uses the Chiaroscura technique.

10. What is your dream job?
Being a librarian! Or a professional potter.

11. What is your favorite musical instrument?
Cello all the way, baby!

My nominees:

Aaron from Page Turning

4. The toe seam on my socks bothers me so sometimes I wear them inside out.

5. I don't like wearing shoes (which is weird cause I really love shoes).

6. I used to hate the winter but now I love it. Taking a big breath of cold air makes me so excited!

Questions for my nominees:

1. What is your favorite color?

Ok guys, thanks for being a good sport and for reading all of that! Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

He likes to holler

Lately, Nikolai has discovered echoes. Namely, that he can shout into almost any cylindrical object and his voice will come back at him distorted.  He shouts into cups, water bottles, even his baby bathtub.  Then the other day, he crawled over to the sliding door and grabbed the PVC pipe that keeps it shut and started shouting into it too!

Cutest baby ever!

Apparently he pays attention

I'm sure you know this already, but children definitely watch what adults do and mimic them.  What I didn't realize is that babies do this too! A few weeks ago, I started making this face at Nikolai without even realizing I was doing it (...I just make weird faces a lot.)

And then, one day, he started doing it too!

We've trained him now so he makes the glower face and then immediately cracks up laughing.

And a video so you can see it in action!

And finally, the best picture ever :D

Lest you think my child is an angel

Here is proof solidly to the contrary:

(but he is wonderful, even if he isn't perfect!)

A pop of color

I painted some chairs! Here's the backstory:

When we moved out of Wymount, we decided we didn't have space to take our table and chairs with us so we gave them away.  When we moved into our new apartment we bought a new table on ksl but waited to find some chairs we liked. Then, lo and behold, my parents got a new table and chairs and had 4 old chairs they no longer needed! I quickly commandeered them to use for my own purposes.

Here's what they looked like before:

(pardon the blurry cell phone pictures)

After sanding:

Along the way, we found some memories from my childhood.

(on the bottom of the chair)

It reads: "Danger Wild animals don't touch" aaand I can't read the last bit. My guess is the chair was turned upside-down to serve as a fence when my siblings and I were playing growing up.

And then I painted them! Here's the result:

I sure do like the color it adds to our apartment!

Before the snow came

Back when it was still warm out, Nikolai and I had some fun exploring in the leaves.

Apparently they tasted good.

Mostly they were crinkly and fun.

What my day looks like

Lately: Getting back into embroidery.

(not pictured: lots of hanging out with Nikolai)

I'll give you one guess

What's my favorite color?

Every year during the few months right before Halloween, wild and crazy ideas of fantastic and elaborate costumes run through my head.  Eventually most of them get crossed off the list and I finally settle on something manageable.  This year I finally settled on dressing up as a family of Star Fleet officers from Star Trek!

The boys are pretty much just generic officers but I am captain Janeway.

Jesse's work had trick-or-treating for kids of the employees so we took Nikolai around.  We sorta commandeered most of his candy though ;)

He did manage to get his hands on a dum dum and got the wrapper off--and it must have been the best thing he ever tasted cause look at his sweet little intense face up there! That, and he screamed like a banshee when we (inevitably) took it away from him.

But as our tiny starship captain he was really very sweet.

Here he is, boldly going where no baby has gone before...

...discovering new and wonderful creatures... commands from his captain's chair...

...and generally being the cutest, tiniest starship captain that ever was!
