I'm still alive!

Sorry for the radio silence!  I've been writing feverishly over here, and unfortunately that means I haven't had much time to blog (or cook, or clean... ;D).  But we're still alive and well! The house is a bit ashambles but there's clean laundry today and dinner in the crock pot so things actually aren't too bad.

So I just wanted to throw in a brief NaNoWriMo update before the whole shabang is over!

I've been in a great mode the past two days--I'm writing a really pivotal scene so I've been writing up a storm. At present I'm actually a full day ahead of schedule, which is definitely something I never thought would happen.

So this is the stats page on the NaNoWriMo website.  It keeps track of my progress and I absolutely love it. Look at my little mountain of words down there.  Isn't that awesome?!?!

(note: you might have to click on it to see the whole thing)

I'm not going to lie, that silly little chart really helps me stay motivated! It tells me the word count I need to shoot for every day, and seeing my progress has been extremely satisfying. Also, I love how they break down all my stats on the left--it's been so helpful to know how much I need to write every day to stay on pace, and how much I've written that day.

So I'm definitely going to finish! There's only 5 more days after today, but being a day ahead puts me in great shape :D  And I won't even have completed my novel by then! I actually haven't reached the real climax yet, so I think I'm going to try and keep up the pace through the beginning of December so I can get it all down. (that's good though--50,000 words is the target but it doesn't make for a very long book, so having more words in the end will be a good thing)

Anyways, that's my update! I should really go fold some laundry now so you'll probably have to wait awhile for some more cute Nikolai pictures.  Wish me luck as I finish this thing!

Silly Niko

Our boy is silly! The other day, he tried to brush Pooh Bear's teeth:

And one night before bed, he got reeeeaaaallly punchy/giggly, and decided it was hilarious to put an apple in my mouth.

We love you Niko!

Belated Halloween detail shot

After Halloween, the lovely Charisse wanted to see a detail shot of the embroidery I did on our Halloween costumes.  Halfway into November, I'm finally posting them!

On my sleeves:

On Jesse's:

Yeah, I put way too much detail into those costumes, I know ;)

Run!

A few months ago, the leaves started changing and the air got cooler and all of the sudden I wanted to run! I primarily blame this urge on how beautiful my half marathon was last year--It was in September, down Big Cottonwood canyon, and the leaves had just changed but not yet fallen, and the whole thing was just amazing.  So this year, when the changing leaves reminded me of how much I loved running, Jesse and I decided to sign up for a 5k together to motivate us to run :D  And last weekend, we did it!

Before:

After:

We were actually pretty proud of our time.  I'm not a super fast runner but our miles per minute was just as fast as my half marathon, which was downhill, and this time Jesse was pushing the running stroller! So we felt like it was a good time for the conditions :D

Also, I have to say that even though it was "just" 3 miles, those muffins afterwards tasted SO GOOD. Nikolai liked them too :)

Yay! We did it! Now we just have to find a way to motivate ourselves to exercise through the winter... ;)

NaNoWriMo update!

Guess what?!?! I'm still doing it!!!

I know, aren't you proud?  I'm not going to lie, though I'm not sure I love what I'm writing, I'm still pretty proud of myself.  I've actually found it's not that hard to write 1,667 words (give or take) every day (thank heavens for toddler naps!) though I must say that the rest of the house is clearly suffering because I've been spending so much time at the computer >.>

But, as of yesterday I'm about 400 words ahead of schedule and I've written

22,054 words!!!!

It's more words than I've ever put down on one subject before, and I think that alone has been making me feel pretty cool.  Anyways, I've made it almost halfway through the month and I think I can keep going! Wish me luck! :D

Silly Niko/Sweet Niko

Some tidbits of Niko silliness/sweetness:

The other day, Nikolai REALLY wanted to wear his tiger costume around the house.  And then he proceeded to climb in the fridge:

Lately, Nikolai has desperately wanted to help/watch me cook, so I've started to oblige. Mostly, he stands on a chair and plays in the utensil drawer while I cook.

Also, two notes about that picture up there: 1) Nikolai has his hand on his face because he's saying "cheese" and pretending to hold a camera up to his face and 2) Yes, that's my livingroom in the background there and yes, it is almost always that messy (at least when Niko is awake!!!)

Another silly: the other day, I came into the livingroom from doing something-or-other and discovered that Nikolai had put all of his trains (a substantial amount) into his shirt.

It was basically the funniest thing ever. I laughed aloud.

One more silly/sweet: The other day, I walked into the livingroom to discover that Nikolai had made some modern art from his blocks and dominos.  Not bad, huh?

And now, just a sweet Niko moment: On Sunday, Nikolai was a little sick (mostly just a runny nose, but we kept him home from church to avoid making the other tots sick all the same) and feeling a little sleepy/snuggly.  When it was getting towards nap time, he started to slow down and before I knew it, he had laid down on daddy on the couch:

So sweet! We love you, our Nikolai!!!

Fall playing

Last week, the weather turned nippy (highs in the mid 40s) so I didn't really feel like taking Niko outside to play, but one day we finally braved  the chill and headed to a nearby playground!

Nikolai had fun on the merry-go-round:

But mostly he played in the sand:

I, on the other hand, spent some nice time marveling at the beauty around me.
Being a slightly anxious person, I often get caught up in needing to be constantly doing something.  That day, I didn't bring a book, or my phone, or my tablet. Instead, I let myself just sit on the merry-go-round and relax.  It was so soothing, just spinning slowly around, and the foliage was heavenly.  It was nice, for once, to just be. It's probably not something I can do all the time, but this once, it was really, really nice.

Then Nikolai and I sat and swung for a bit, until he was lulled into a sort of reverie (staring at a trash truck) in this sweet position:

What a lovely fall morning!

Grandpa!

Last week, my dad had a business trip and managed to schedule a long layover in Detroit so he could come see us! We had a nice quiet dinner out and then spent the rest of the evening playing with Nikolai.

Sadly, I only snapped one picture while my dad was here.  Fortunately, it was a sweet one!

My dad had to leave the next morning but it was so nice to see him while we could.  We love you, dad!

NaNoWriMo

Guess what, friends?  This year I'm participating in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo)!

For the uninformed, that's where you attempt to write a whole novel (50,000 words) during the month of November. I half tried it last year, but only got a few days in before I lost steam and stopped.  But this year! This year I will PREVAIL!  Luckily, I was able to resurrect last years' story so I don't have to do as much dreaming up, and I'm feeling a lot more motivated this year.  So far, I've written 5,421 words and I'm feeling super proud of myself :)  Make no mistake, I'm fairly certain I'm writing YA fantasy drivel, but somehow it's satisfying to be producing something. And like they say, if I'm ever going to be a writer (also no guarantee), I'd better get my first half a dozen bad stories out of the way so the good ones can come through, right?

Anyways, I'll try to post weekly updates about how I'm doing (for posterity's sake, right?), so wish me luck!

Halloween!

Well, here I am, blogging about Halloween three days late. Really, I'm blogging about it a week late, because the pictures I'm posting are actually from our church's trunk or treat (trick or treating from the the backs of cars) from last weekend!

I'll go ahead and state right out that I'm that crazy woman that spends 40+ hours making Halloween costumes that get seen for less than two hours...but it was fun, ok?  And although maybe it was silly to go to the work of embroidering Halloween costumes, we're most definitely going to keep those shirts now and re-purpose them for later costumes.  (also, random side note: a slightly nerdier alternate reality version of myself DEFINITELY would have been a cosplayer--you know, one of those kids that dresses up crazy for anime conventions. Cause boy do I like spending forever making a costume!)  Anyways.  Without further ado, behold: Jesse and I as Russian peasants, and our pet siberian tiger!

The trunk or treat was FREEZING but a total blast.  Our friends Megan and Jordan set up a carnival in their trunk and busted out some silly costumes, which all the kids loved:

Sort of surprisingly, Nikolai really enjoyed himself! First of all, there were doughnuts, which is an obvious win, but he also got the hang of walking around to people's trunks and getting candy placed in his bag.  We tried to get him to say "please" at the very least, but as it turns out the first piece of candy he got was a lollipop and he was too busy sucking it later to say much of anything.

Nikolai did spot his BFF Hyrum, and they had a fun time chasing each other around the cars in the parking lot.

And finally, my favorite part of Niko's costume:

That little tiger tail dragging on the ground. SO CUTE!!!

Yay for a fun Halloween!
